I know I know… if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. We made our announcement to our friends, coworkers, and family. We are selling our house, paying off debt, selling our stuff, quitting our jobs, and buying an RV to live on the road. Many of our friends said, “You are crazy?!” and how could I argue. What could I say. I mean their logic is sound… right? We look crazy, we act crazy, and we sound crazy, so we are probably crazy! Let me leave my "padded room" and take off this nice "white jacket," and I will give you 3 reasons why we are the sane ones.
1. LIVE DEBT FREE! We are now under the belief that there is not such thing as good debt. The only “necessary debt” would be a home loan in the right circumstances. Ideally if we can’t afford it, we simply won’t buy it. A far cry from the norm. A far cry from the sane approach of single handedly fixing America’s economy by consuming more “stuff.” We have a small payment on our motorhome, about the equivalent of a car payment with a 5-7 year plan to pay it off, and beyond that we are debt free.
Side Note: We are the only country where a high school graduate can’t buy a drink, but could sign a paper and take on 6 figures in student loan debt, and we are the crazy ones!
2. LESS IS MORE! Many people confuse minimalism with going without. We may not be considered “minimalist” in the harshest sense. We don’t rid ourselves of our “important things” we rid ourselves with the excess. We choose to live with less. Less distractions, less maintenance, less stuff and trade that in for more. More time, more quality, more peace, and more adventure. We are making a conscious decision to invest in experiences, to curate our possessions, and to make the most of our income and of our time together. I guess we are a bit loco. A family who purposely creates time to spend together.
Fun Fact: The average home has 300,000 items in it! Kids have an average of 238 toys, but only play with 12. The average women spends 8 years of their life, shopping!
3. LIVE DREAMS NOW! Here is the sane way to live your life. You work for 50 years, and if you saved enough, if you were successful enough, you get to rest, and you get to retire! (1 in 5 never retire). Meanwhile, you realize that all your best years, all your healthy years were spent working for someone else. I know I seem crazy, but I want to live my dreams now, while I am healthy, and while I can enjoy myself. I want to be around my kids as they grow up, not away at the office. I am choosing to live my dream now! I know we are nuts, we are “crazy” but we are also excited to wake up everyday.
So if we act like we are happy, we look like we are happy and we sound like we are happy, then we are probably happy.
